Pre-drive Check: Engine & Interior Controls

This section covers the engine bay check and interior controls the driver must be able to operate confidently.

Under the bonnet – quick check

Battery: terminals tight, no corrosion, secured in place. Alternator belt: present, no cracks.

Explanation

Controls you must confidently operate at the exam

• All exterior lights (incl. fog), indicators, hazard lights
• Wipers and washers (all speeds, single wipe, rear wiper)
• Heating / ventilation / A/C, front & rear demist
• Steering column and seat adjustments (reach, rake, height)

Mirror controls (left of driver's knee)

• L/R selector: choose which mirror to adjust
• Joystick: fine-tune mirror angle
• Fold mirrors: for tight spaces or car washes

Driver assist buttons (upper dash)

• Lane Keep Assist: warns if you drift across a lane line
• Auto high beam: automatic high/low beam switching
• AEB: detects potential collision and brakes automatically

Centre console and driver area

• Handbrake: pull to apply, button + lower to release
• Traction control OFF (short press): allows brief wheel spin when stuck
• ESP OFF (long press): disables stability control – normal driving: keep ON
• Front seat heaters

Summary

• Check fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid, washer)
• Know how to operate lights, wipers, demisting
• Red warning light = stop the vehicle immediately
