Emergency Lanes and Rescue Corridor
The rescue corridor (emergency lane) is a means that can save lives. Since 2020, it is mandatory in the Czech Republic to create a rescue corridor when stopping traffic on a highway or multi-lane road.
Section 41 of Act 361/2000 Coll. establishes the obligation to clear the way for vehicles with the right of way and the rules for creating a rescue corridor.
Explanation
HOW TO CREATE A RESCUE CORRIDOR:
On a two-lane or multi-lane road (in one direction):
- Vehicles in the LEFT lane move as far LEFT as possible
- Vehicles in the RIGHT lane move as far RIGHT as possible
- A free corridor for emergency services will be created between them
On a three-lane road:
- Left lane → LEFT
- Middle lane → RIGHT
- Right lane → RIGHT
- The corridor is formed between the left and middle lanes
Rule: The corridor is ALWAYS formed between the LEFTMOST lane and the others.
IMPORTANT: Create the rescue corridor IMMEDIATELY, even before you stop or significantly slow down. Do not wait until you hear the siren!
VEHICLES WITH THE RIGHT OF WAY (Section 41):
Vehicles with activated blue and red lights and sirens:
- Ambulance (emergency service)
- Fire truck
- Police
- Customs administration
- Military police
What YOU MUST do: 1. IMMEDIATELY clear the way (even drive onto the sidewalk if the situation requires it) 2. Stop if necessary 3. The driver with the right of way may exceed speed limits, run a red light, etc.
What YOU MUST NOT do:
- Follow the ambulance in its 'lane' (abuse of the rescue corridor)
- Block passage
Fine for not creating a lane: 4,000 - 10,000 CZK + 6 points. Fine for abusing the rescue corridor: up to 10,000 CZK + points.
Example
Example - Traffic Jam on Highway D1:
You are driving on D1 and traffic comes to a stop. You are in the left lane.
1. Even BEFORE stopping, move your car as far LEFT as possible (towards the median barrier) 2. Drivers in the right lane move RIGHT (towards the shoulder) 3. A rescue corridor will form between the rows 4. After 5 minutes, you hear a siren - the ambulance is passing through the corridor 5. After the ambulance passes, DO NOT CLOSE the corridor! Other emergency vehicles may follow.
Example - ambulance behind you in the city: 1. Turn on the right turn signal 2. Slow down and move as far right as possible 3. If necessary, also drive onto the sidewalk 4. Let the ambulance pass
Common mistakes
Common Mistakes:
1. "I create the rescue corridor only when I hear the siren" - NO! Create it IMMEDIATELY before stopping traffic.
2. "I can drive behind the ambulance in its corridor" - NO! This is an abuse of the rescue corridor and is punishable.
3. "The corridor is between the right and left lanes" - CORRECT, but on a three-lane road, it is ALWAYS next to the LEFTMOST lane.
4. "It's enough to move a little" - Move as MUCH as POSSIBLE. Emergency vehicles need enough space.

- When: Create IMMEDIATELY as soon as traffic slows down – not when you hear the siren
Vehicles with lights:
- Blue + red light + siren = you must yield and stop
- Orange light = warning of an obstacle (you do not have to stop)
How to yield to rescuers: 1. Slow down 2. Turn on the turn signal in the direction you are yielding 3. Clear the lane – even by driving onto the shoulder or across a solid line (it is allowed) 4. Wait – another emergency vehicle may follow the ambulance
What the law says
(1) Řidič vozidla, který při plnění úkolů souvisejících s výkonem zvláštních povinností užívá zvláštního výstražného světla modré nebo modré a červené barvy,2) případně doplněného o zvláštní zvukové výstražné znamení (dále jen "vozidlo s právem přednostní jízdy"), není povinen dodržovat § 4 písm. c), § 5 odst. 1 písm. h) a odst. 2 písm. f), § 7 odst. 1 písm. b), § 11, § 12 odst. 1, 2, 4, 5 a 7, § 13 až 17, § 18 odst. 2, 3, 4 a 8, § 19, § 20, § 21 odst. 2, 3, 4, 5 a 6, § 22, 23, § 24 odst. 3 a 4, § 25 odst. 1, 3, 4 a 5, § 26, § 27 odst. 1, 2, 3 a 4, § 28 odst. 2, 3 a 5, § 31, § 35 odst. 1 a 2, § 36 odst. 1, 2 a 4, § 39 odst. 4 a 5, § 39a odst. 3 a 4, § 39b odst. 2 a 4, § 47 odst. 2 písm. a) a c), odst. 3 písm. a), c), d), f) a g) a odst. 5, § 48 odst. 1, 2, 3, 4 a 5, § 53 odst. 2 a § 67 odst. 8; je však povinen dbát potřebné opatrnosti, aby neohrozil bezpečnost provozu na pozemních komunikacích.
(8) Není-li dálnice nebo silnice pro motorová vozidla s nejméně dvěma jízdními pruhy volně průjezdná z důvodu kolony stojících nebo pomalu jedoucích vozidel, jsou řidiči vozidel povinni vytvořit mezi jízdními pruhy prostor pro průjezd vozidel s právem přednostní jízdy; při tom smějí vjet na krajnici nebo na střední dělící pás. Jsou-li v jednom směru jízdy více než dva jízdní pruhy, vytváří se tento prostor mezi jízdním pruhem, který je nejvíce vlevo, a k němu přiléhajícím jízdním pruhem. Do tohoto prostoru smějí vjet pouze vozidla s právem přednostní jízdy, vozidla správce pozemní komunikace a vozidla sloužící k odstranění následků dopravní nehody nebo překážky provozu na pozemních komunikacích.
(9) Svítí-li zvláštní výstražné světlo modré nebo modré a červené barvy na stojícím vozidle, musí řidiči ostatních vozidel podle okolností snížit rychlost jízdy a popřípadě i zastavit vozidlo.
